In this lesson we are going to consider the effect of sound upon the world in which we live. Sound plays an important part in your life, influencing you in ways of which you are but dimly aware.
Sound sets into motion the substance of which all forms are made. It may increase, decrease or even change direction of the already existent motion of the substance, but it always has its effect, and that effect has to do with its vibratory frequency.
All substance has motion; the speed of its motion is defined as its frequency and manifests as sound.
We know then that every particle of substance within and without our bodies is moving at a definite frequency and is sounding its own peculiar note. The aggregate of these notes within a form (such as the human body) emit a peculiar dominant note which is the key vibration of that particular organism.
The dominant note or vibration can be seen in manifestation in the tonal quality of the voice, in the quality of the emotions and in the response the individual makes to his environment. Thus when one speaks, he betrays to the one who knows, the degree of harmony or discord he is bringing into manifestation. When each particle of substance has been brought into right relationship with each other particle, and the central directing life (the Soul), then the sound produced is complete harmony and can be likened unto the music of the spheres.
All new sound has its effect upon all existent sound and can be consciously directed to create a desired condition. It is easy to see how the sound of a voice will effect the sound of the particles of substance within a body, either increasing or decreasing this frequency, and creating a condition of harmony or discord. A kind word, for instance, spoken at the right time and carrying the right tonal quality, can soothe troubled emotions and bring harmony into a condition of discord. It can do even more; it can bring a feeling of well‑being to one who is ill and if spoken by one who knows, it can heal.
Stop for a moment and think of all the different sounds which reach you every day. The sound of the voices of all those people with whom you come in contact, the radio, the planes flying overhead, the automobiles in the street, the electrical appliances in your home, the animals, the birds, the wind; all of these and many more are making themselves known to you via sound, and that sound has its effect upon you and your environment; but most of all you are influenced by the sound of your own voice.
Go back to the sound of your voice just prior to receiving this lesson. What was its tonal quality? What impression was it making upon you and others? What type of influence was it exerting? Was it positive or negative? How do you feel as you remember it?
Now speak your name slowly and carefully, allowing your voice to pitch itself. Analyze the tonal quality ‑ is it soft, low, high, scratchy, harsh, purposeful, controlled? This is extremely important, for it will tell you the degree of harmony you have established within yourself. If its tonal quality is melodious and beautiful without any attempt on your part to make it that way, then you have developed a fine degree of harmony between the three aspects of your nature; the mental, emotional and physical.
If it is unsteady and inclined to rise in pitch at the end of a word, this means you are divided within, that the mind and emotions are not agreed as to purpose, and decision is then difficult for you to reach.
If it is too loud, this indicates that you are self‑centered, superior and very insecure emotionally.
If it is too soft and indistinct, the indication is that you are torn by imaginary fears, that you worry and fret over non-essentials and that buried deep within your subconscious is a guilt complex.
If it is harsh or scratchy, it indicates that you have not adjusted to your environment; that you do not accept your responsibilities and that you are driven by buried hostility.
These are but a few of the examples of what the voice reveals. Listen to your voice as you speak to others and as you go about the process of daily living, and analyze it. See if you can discover the environmental areas with which you have not established harmony or right relationship. In this manner you will be preparing yourself for the information in the next lesson which will concern itself with how you can utilize sound to bring harmony into your life and affairs.
